UK Mixed Bag Vol. 1

So here we are, the first instalment of four compilations I've created over the weekend from various vinyl 12"s in my collection. Initially I ripped a lot of them onto mp3 just for personal use but I had honestly forgotten about how great some of these tracks are.

Its called a mixed bag for a reason for starters, with a huge spectrum of artists spanning from the early 90s all the way up to possibly about 2005, and on this first volume we have some big names and some small names all together on the same 18-track album.

You've got the northern panache of Asaviour and Jehst, the legendary Blak Twang, the veteran sounds of MCD over a Deckwrecka track and Huntkillbury Finn lying amongst the newer names of Foreign Beggars...not to mention some classics in there from London Posse, Karl Hinds & DJ MK.

Its a joy to listen to some of these tracks after such a long time, and even this site has took a small hiatus from posting UK songs recently admittedly. Most of that is due to there being a dearth in UK underground rap that I personally find as inspiring as that which was released 5-10 years ago, but hopefully the frontrunners like Sway and Dizzee can inspire and usher in a new breed that are fit to take the torch and fire it up.

Until then, enjoy UK hip-hop at its finest...

SpineTV : Live TV: Fun House

SpineTV : Live TV: Fun House

Been going for a while but I've just been hipped to it tonight on Twitter and its cool as fizzuck. Monday to Thursday after 9pm til 12midnight SpineTV are broadcasting live uk turntablists and deejays from the hip hop kitchen.

Tonight we've got DJ MK & Harry Love, with Mr Thing, DJ Yoda and many more dropping by. In view of recent events concerning Guru's heart attack (hope he gets better) theyre dropping classic Gang Starr right now and it sounds cooler than a polar bear's toenails (word to Big Boi).

Harry Love On The Beats

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

You've already heard some of his beats off the last post, but Harry Love deserves to have some more focus. He's been making quality british hip-hop for years now, and has been involved in some way in over 50% of all of the important releases coming out of the UK. He has worked with nearly everyone and seems to only be getting better.

Harry Love's sound is extremely distinctive. He makes dark but soulful music, and is somewhat of a British Dj Premier with his scratches. On his myspace page, he has posted up some instrumentals from a forthcoming album, 'Speechless', and most people who even have a passing knowledge of british rap will know his beat on Klashnekoff's 'Murda'.

He has made some quality music with Terra Firma, Tommy Evans & YNR Productions, Yungun, Verb T & most other artists you can name, including even US psuedo-pimp-rapper Captain Back$lap a.k.a. J-Zone and Jehst on my personal favourite Harry Love song 'Staircase To Stage'.

Harry Love will more than likely continue to make brilliant beats, and push his own sound to the fullest. And just a final tip from me, if you're looking to be big on the british hip-hop scene and need to be respected quickly, look no further than hooking up with this lad @ the Beats Pharmacy.

Klashnekoff - 'Murda' (from 'The Sagas Of Klashnekoff')
Kyza - 'Lights Out' (from the 12" vinyl single 'Lights Out/Harsh Reality')
Yungun - 'What Eye See Part II' (from Yungun's LP 'The Essance')
Jehst, J-Zone & Harry Love - 'Staircase To Stage' (from the 12" vinyl single of the same name)
